The Carboniferous coal deposits were the main source of energy during the industrial revolution and are still of great economic importance.
The great Carboniferous coal deposits owe their existence to two factors. The first is the type of bark from trees of this period (and in particular the evolution of the bark fiber lignin). The second factor is the low sea level that occurred during the Carboniferous, in comparison with Devon. This led to the formation of extensive lowland swamps and forests in North America and Europe. It is hypothesized that during this period had not yet evolved animals and bacteria able to digest the new lignin.
