In 1891, Thomas J. Foster initiated in Scarnton (Pensilvnia) the International Correspondence Institute, with a course on measures of security in the mining work. In 1891, the administration of the University of Wisconsin accepted the proposal of its professors to organize courses for correspondence in the services of university extension. One year later, the director of the University of Chicago, William R. Harper, that already the use of the correspondence in the formation of professors for the sunday schools had tried, created a Division of Education for Correspondence in the Department of Extension of that University (IT HISSES, 2003).

The perfectioning of the post office services, the applied agilizao of the ways of transport and, over all, technological developments to the field of the communication and the information had influenced decisively in the destinations of the long-distance education. In 1922, the old Soviet Union organized an education system for correspondence that in two years started to take care of 350 a thousand users. From then on, the use of a new started media, the radio, that also penetrated in formal education. The radio reached much success in national and international experiences, having been sufficiently explored in Latin America in the programs of education in the distance of Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, among others. After the decades of 1960 and 1970, the long-distance education, even so keeping the written materials as base, it started to incorporate integradamente articulated and audio and videocassete, the transmissions of radio and television, videotexto, the computer and, more recently, the technology of multiways, that combine texts, sounds, images, as well as mechanisms of generation of alternative ways of learning (hipertextos, different languages) and instruments for immediate setting of learning with feedback (informatizados tutorial programs) etc. The Greeks and Romans, not they dimensionaram this type of communication net that would finish for reaching such dimension, that they would finish for if transforming into a net of unified communication, through systems capable to integrate communication of voice, video, furniture and applications centered in web in the net of data, as is seen nowadays.
